The Ten Minute Connection

To be effective, parents must spend time with their children, talking, instructing, and encouraging. If a family is struggling with negative feelings, or even if everyone is just busy going his own way, kids will not feel valued and connected with their parents. Think about it. If you feel your boss values you and cares about you as a person, you are more willing to work hard and have a desire to please her. When kids feel connected in the family, they are more receptive to parental teaching and boundaries.

Spend some time this week with your child doing something fun. Try to give each child in your family a bit of your undivided attention every day. Even 10 or 15 minutes a can strengthening your relationship. Play with Legos, paint nails, have a snack together, enjoy a quick card game, or an active game of tag that will help you connect after a busy day. Playfulness and laughter actually build positive responses to you in your child’s brain and the next time you have to say no, they’ll be more receptive.
